2015 NTHU Design Workshop(3): Running a workshop!

In a workshop, everything is dynamic.

Workshop Agenda

UX process

Let's take a quick review of UX workshop agenda and flow.
I couldn't wait to start!

1. Icebreaker
Topic: use the least items to make the table's length

Icebreaker

It's a perfect time to warm up the conversation among participants.
Students they had fun and got to know each others.
It helped them to feel comfortable and it was a good start for workshop.

2. Introduction

Introduce my mentors

Talking about my perspective on UX

Students focused on the topic

3. Warm-Ups for Brainstorming

Brainstorming Topic

The exercise has two parts.
First, I will let them draw on a A4 paper.

Although these drawings are really wildly different,
they share common quality.

Most drawings have nodes and links.
These produce a full system model and
show how we think something works.

In the second part, I asked them to draw on sticky notes

Then, they needed to discuss in a group

They exchanged their ideas and tried to organized them

They will refine the process again and again through discussion

They synthesized several points of view and
illustrate the process to class

Even within different teams,
there were still some surprising elements would come out

The exercise let them to understand the magic of sticky notes.
It helped us get clear, engaged and aligned.

4. Problem Statement

This topic is designed so that student could associate their personal experiences,
which allows more flexible responses and more creativity.

There are two main points here, "who" and "what"

"Who"

They might be college students, family, couple or a single person
They all have different needs
"What"

What's the pain point?
What are the obstacles when booking online movie tickets?

Students they discussed about customers' three main needs

They used sticky notes to help them organize

5. Customer Journey Map

Then I started to explain what's customer journey map

I used warm-up exercise to explain.
For example, in my point of view, there were five steps of cooking an egg.

Customer Journey Map of cooking an egg

Then, I gave them about 20~30 minutes for discussion

During this session, mentors and I would help them to lead a discussion and to organize ideas.

6. Brainstorming

Before brainstorming, there are some tips they should know. For example like quantity counts at this stage, encourage wild and exaggerated ideas and try to use images make them memorable.

For this session, I asked them to draw the features about their apps.

First, they drew on sticky notes individually. Later, a team should collect each sticky note, one at a time. Everybody will have a chance to read their ideas. Then, they emerged some similar concepts. Ultimately, it would narrow or outright select from the list of ideas.

Start with solo brainstorms

Start to share as a group

Collect and cluster ideas

During this session, mentors and I would join their discussion.
We encouraged them for creativity and paid special attention to ideas that defy categorization.

7. Prototype
Define what is prototype

Give them graphic examples

First, I let them to draw on A4 paper

If they got stuck or confused,
I would help them to develop ideas
and lead conversation to a direction

In addition, the instructor should take care of time management because each team has their own  pace. If some teams finish earlier than others, the instructor can tell to practice pitch presentation and rehearsal again and again. On the other hand, the instructor should set time reminder to every session.

8. 3-min Pitch

After going through all the UX process, finally we came to the most exciting part: Pitch
It was really fun to see their final products with great combination and full of creativity.
I was surprised and glad they all did a great job.

In my opinion, a successful pitch at this kind of event should acquire a right story that illustrates the flow, function and vision.

At this type of workshop, the instructor should give positive feedback that motivate them.
Because the purpose of this workshop was to have fun, right?
Therefore, it was no need to be as serious as Hackathon or official contest, there were judges and professionals.
In addition, be sincere and specific that students could know what was good and appreciate their teamwork.

9. Conclusion and Recap

UX is really amazing and today's process is just like an appetizer.
The knowledge is unlimited. I hoped everyone have a delightful afternoon.
That is, I achieved my goal of this workshop.

Mentor's feedback

Furthermore, I thanked my amazing mentors, who helped to facilitate this workshop.
They both gave some advices to the students like the details of UI design is significant and time management is really important too.

My amazing team

Overall, it was a huge success. Thanks to professor, mentors, participants and my family. The flow was fluent and the workshop finished on time and the outcome was productive. Most importantly, everyone enjoyed through the process. I'm really proud of myself that it was the first UX design workshop held in National Tsing Hua University and ran by students. Hope I can keep refine my UX skills and make it a regular event in Taiwan. Thank you so much :)
